Glossary

The terms SailEdge™ by SailrScience uses, each defined once, in the words the pages use.

One definition per term, in the same words everywhere. A term with a dotted underline links to its entry here. Each entry carries the short definition the pages use and points to the page that defines the term in full.

Vocabulary

The terms, defined once.

archetype
one of the fleet’s eight recurring design types
Other forms: archetypes. Read the full definition on FleetEdge
calibration
the validated, saved boat-side profile that every sailmaker’s sail-side model builds on
Other forms: hull calibration. Read the full definition
cell
one intersection of the wind matrix — one true wind angle, one true wind speed, one sail combination evaluated against the ORC polar
Other forms: cells, Edge Map cell. Read the full definition
Center of Effort
where the aerodynamic force effectively acts — modeled per sail from its planform geometry, trim state and wind condition
Other forms: CE. Read the full definition
CLR
the Center of Lateral Resistance — the underwater pivot point where hydrodynamic side forces act on the hull and keel
Other forms: Center of Lateral Resistance. Read the full definition
cohort
the boats a figure is computed over — a real entry list, a class, a fleet — named on every figure
Other forms: cohorts. Read the full definition on FleetEdge
confidence
the model’s own statement of how sure a cell is — an amber cell names the boundary that limits it
Read the full definition
crew residual
what remains after the boat’s evaluated pace is accounted for — negative is faster, in s/nm
Other forms: crew-residual. Read the full definition on FleetEdge
crossover chart
the chart of which sail wins at which wind speed and angle — the one skippers tape to the coaming
Other forms: crossover. Read the full definition
demo
the demo boats — open to everyone, no sign-in needed
Other forms: demo boats. Read the full definition
Digital Twin
the live performance model SailEdge builds from your ORC certificate — its certified dimensions, rig geometry and rated sail inventory
Other forms: Digital Twins. Read the full definition
Edge Map
the performance delta grid — every sail measured against your boat’s ORC polar at every wind speed and angle
Other forms: Edge Maps. Read the full definition
engineering tier
the full computation — engineering-grade access for qualified partners; tiers gate explainability, never physics
Read the full definition
Expert Mode
the professional tier’s deeper readout of the same solved physics — never a better answer
Read the full definition
force balance
the solve that balances the aero and hydro forces at one wind condition — a SailEdge computation, never an ORC rating
Other forms: force-balance solve. Read the full definition
Optimal Map
the crossover chart computed from your ORC certificate — the sail your boat can actually hold at every wind speed and angle
Read the full definition
ORC polar
the certificate’s polar performance grid — the official ORC speeds at each wind speed and angle that every Edge Map delta is measured against
Other forms: polar, polars, polar grid. Read the full definition
physics evaluation
one full aero and hydro force-balance solve at one point of the wind envelope
Other forms: physics evaluations. Read the full definition
professional tier
the tier Expert Mode opens — the deeper readout for those who want the full physics
Read the full definition
rated sail inventory
the sails your ORC certificate rates — the wardrobe every plan is solved from
Other forms: sail inventory. Read the full definition
Sail Study
one sail changed, everything else held constant, the result shown across the wind range
Other forms: Sail Studies. Read the full definition
sailing state
the balance a stability result describes — natural, after modeled depower, or after a modeled sail change from the rated inventory
Other forms: sailing states. Read the full definition
stability
the boat’s righting behavior — rated on the certificate, then computed by the R16 stability layer for each sailing state
Other forms: rated stability. Read the full definition
subscriber tier
the tier a SailEdge license unlocks — your own certificate and the physics it earns
Other forms: subscriber. Read the full definition
